The 1619 Project Book Club Series: Dispossession—Native American & Black American Experiences
This virtual session will be facilitated by Teresa Castellanos (Class XXVI), Trustee, San Jose Unified School Board, and Immigrant Services Coordinator, SCC Office of Immigrant Relations, and Chris Norwood (Class XXVIII), Vice President, Milpitas Unified School Board, and Chief Strategy Officer & District Partnerships, SV Education Foundation.
Participants should read Chapter 5, “Dispossession” by Tiya Miles, about intersections between Black American and Native American experiences. Come ready to share your reflections, questions, and ideas about how the reading relates to our understanding of U.S. history and current issues.
In this session, we will explore:
- Is it important to learn about this history? How might it be helpful or harmful for students and our society?
- How do these historical examples of systemic hierarchies, division, and solidarity relate to issues we face today?
