ALF National Presents: Race, Religion, & Recovery

Event Description:

Our country is wrestling with multiple crises that have born an opportunity for us to write a new recovery narrative. Will the door to racial justice be open long enough for transformative personal awakenings and policy shifts? How will religious institutions play a role in our healing? The story is being written as we speak and the outcomes are our individual and collective responsibility. Join ALF Senior Fellows from across the country to practice deep dialogue on how we move our country forward to ensure liberty, freedom and justice for all.

Dr. Clayborne Carson
Dr. Clayborne Carson is the founder of the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, where he is also the Martin Luther King Jr. Centennial Professor of History. He has devoted most of his professional life to the study of Martin Luther King Jr. and the movements the iconic orator inspired. Dr. Carson’s scholarly publications have focused on African-American protest movements and political thought of the period after World War II. In 1985, Coretta Scott King invited Dr. Carson to edit and publish the papers of her late husband. Under Carson’s direction, the King Papers Project has produced seven volumes of The Papers of Martin Luther King Jr. He has served as a consultant on several documentary films and has appeared on many national TV and radio programs.

Reverend Cheryl Moore Adamson, M.Div.
Reverend Cheryl Moore Adamson was born in Hartsville, South Carolina on May 23, 1952 and grew up in Conway, where she graduated from high school in 1970. She attended the University of South Carolina, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 1974 and the University of Maryland at College Park where she earned a Masters’ Degree in Health Education in 1982.

Reverend Adamson is the Executive Director of the Palmetto Works Community Development Corporation, the umbrella organization for Palmetto Kids! Music and Arts Academy, the Palmetto Youth Leadership Academy, and CHOPS Produce, a fruit & vegetable store serving a low-income community in a USDA certified food desert. She has served on the National Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, on the board of the Waccamaw Community Foundation, and is a member of Class II of the Waccamaw American Leadership Forum. She has served as the Chairperson of the Board of the Baptist House of Studies at Duke Divinity School and as the convener of the Annual Women’s Beachwalk Retreat.

Chris Norwood (Moderator), Class XXVIII
Chris Norwood is a Stanford University Technologist , Founder of Bay Area Tutoring Association, Milpitas Unified School Board of Trustees Vice President, member of San Jose State College of Education Advisory Committee and American Leadership Forum (ALF) Silicon Valley Senior Fellow. Chris has been a social justice advocate, civil rights community leader and education champion for digital literacy and computer science equity in the San Francisco Bay Area. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Christian Leadership and Biblical Theology from William Jessup University, CLC and ITIL 4.0 Certified, married 20 years with two children.
