Exemplary Leadership Spotlight: Reymundo Espinoza

At this year’s Exemplary Leadership Celebration, on April 18, American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley will present ALF Senior Fellow Reymundo Espinoza (ALF Class XX) with the 2024 John W. Gardner Award. This award is presented annually to two Senior Fellows in recognition of their efforts to bridge divides and their commitment to uphold ALF’s core values of diversity, inclusiveness, engagement, and respect.

About Reymundo Espinoza
Raised in the small desert town of Coachella, California, where farming was the predominant industry, Reymundo attended Stanford University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and his Master of Public Health degree, specializing in Hospital Administration, from UC Berkeley in 1975.

Mr. Espinoza has 48 years of experience in the healthcare industry and has worked with various non-profit and for-profit institutions throughout California and a limited amount of time in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Espinoza’s experience includes working in hospitals, planning agencies, and hospital associations and providing administrative and oversight activities in hospital-based and freestanding outpatient clinics.

Mr. Espinoza served as the CEO of Gardner Family Health Network, Inc. (Gardner Health Services (GHS) for 37 years. GHS is a non-profit community health center organization that provides comprehensive primary care and behavioral health services to underserved communities in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, California. GHS services include medical (adult, pediatric, women’s health), dental, podiatry, optometry, chiropractic, pharmacy, behavioral health services for both the low to moderate and chronically mentally ill population, health education, enrollment services, nutritional services through the Women, Infants and Children’s program, comprehensive services targeting patients with complex needs, and healthcare to the homeless services.

Under Mr. Espinoza’s leadership, GHS continued to expand its sites, services, and programs. Currently, GHS has nine sites in Santa Clara County and one site in San Mateo County, of which 7 are outpatient health centers, along with a Healthcare to the Homeless Program that operates two clinic mobile units. GHS provides services to over 46,000 patients/clients, where 90% of our patients are at 150% of the federal poverty level (family of 4 making $56,000), of which over 12,000 have no insurance coverage.

Mr. Espinoza is a Co-Founder of the California Primary Care Association, Board Member and Co-Founder of the Community Health Partnership of Santa Clara, and Member of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC). He has received several awards and recognition for his leadership in healthcare, including the 2023 Silver Medal Jefferson Award for expanding quality, affordable healthcare so the South Bay’s underserved can live healthier lives and the 2023 Latinx Business Leadership Award from the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Through his dedication to community-based care and healthcare equity, Mr. Espinoza has transformed Gardner Health Services into a leading healthcare provider for underserved communities in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. His commitment to patient-centered care and social justice has helped to improve the lives of countless individuals and families in the region.

About John W. Gardner
ALF’s John W. Gardner Award is named in honor of John W. Gardner (1912 – 2002), former Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, and author of On Leadership (1990). Gardner helped design the national ALF organization and helped develop the Silicon Valley chapter.
