Dog Whistle Politics, Racism, and the Housing Crisis
Dog Whistle Politics, Racism, and the Housing Crisis
Featuring Ian Haney López, Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at U.C. Berkeley and author of Dog Whistle Politics: How Coded Racial Appeals Have Reinvented Racism and Wrecked the Middle Class.
Join us as we hear from Ian Haney López about how dog-whistle politics contributes to our housing crisis, followed by a panel discussion featuring SCC Supervisor Cindy Chavez (Class XII), former Cupertino Mayor Savita Vaidhyanathan (Class XXXV), and Ramona Giwargis of San Jose Spotlight—moderated by Child Advocates of Silicon Valley CEO Frederick Ferrer (Class XI). Engage in dialogue about:
- Deepening understanding of dog-whistling and the consequence on BIPOC and low-income communities and the impact on our whole community with growing inequities and the housing crisis
- Becoming better-informed “consumers” of public messages – political campaigns, news reports, social media, dominant narratives, etc. – and stronger decision-makers as voters, civically-engaged community members, and leaders of institutions and communities

Ian Haney López is the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at the University of California, Berkeley. He has published four books and two anthologies, and has been a visiting professor at Yale, New York University, and Harvard. He lives in Richmond, California.
